Setting your puppy or dog up for a healthy life includes ensuring they are up to date on vaccinations and preventatives.

Vaccination typeFrequency
RabiesEvery 1-3 years
Distemper/Parvovirus Every 1-3 years
Bordetella Yearly
LeptospirosisYearly
Lyme Yearly

Rabies vaccination of all dogs 6 months of age and older is required by the State of Iowa and by most cities. Please see your city ordinance for specific information.

Preventatives

Active dogs (and their owners) benefit from flea and tick preventative such as Nexgard or Nexgard Plus. Dogs are also susceptible to heartworm and a preventative like Heartgard Plus or Nexgard Plus should be given monthly year-round.

Spay and neuter

Female puppies should be spayed at 6 months and adult female dogs can be spayed at any time when not in active heat.  Male puppies can be neutered at 6 months and adult male dogs can be neutered at any time. Read more about why it’s important to spay or neuter your pet.

Grooming

Nails should be trimmed monthly if not being worn down with regular walks.  Grooming and bathing schedules depend on breed, coat type and activity level.

Annual Check-ups

Regularly scheduled check-ups are the best way to monitor your dog’s health as they grow and age. Your veterinarian will examine eyes, ears, teeth, coat, check the heart and lungs as well as feel the abdomen. We will help you stay current on vaccinations and taylor care plans for any concerns that you might have about your cat or kitten during all life stages.

Health concerns

Signs you should bring your puppy or dog in to see one of our doctors include daily vomiting, diarrhea that lasts more than 2-3 days, decreased food or water consumption, decreased activity, and not acting like themselves. Checking early can help prevent serious illness and hospitalization.

If you have questions about your dog’s health please call  Family Pet Veterinary at 319-643-3555 and one of our staff will be happy to talk through your concerns.
